According to sources, today will mark Mukul Rohatgi’s return to the position of Attorney General of India, the government’s top lawyer.
In June 2017, Mukul Rohatgi, 67, retired from his position as attorney general. After him, KK Venugopal took control.
The additional term of Mr. Venugopal expires on September 30. He spent five years as the top law officer at the Centre.
Mr. Venugopal, 91, requested that the Center let him go when his three years were up in 2020 because of his advanced age. He was asked by the government to serve another term. He stayed on, barely for two years.
According to sources, Mukul Rohatgi will start his second stint on October 1. He has also previously held the position of Additional Solicitor General for India.
According to sources, even after Mr. Rohatgi left office in 2017, the administration engaged him on delicate legal matters, like as the repeal of Article 370, which gave Jammu and Kashmir special status.
In 2014, shortly after the BJP won a huge mandate and came to power, Mr. Rohatgi was chosen to serve as the top attorney for the government for his first term.
One of the most well-known attorneys in India, Mr. Rohatgi has won a number of significant cases, including the Gujarat riots case in which he represented the Gujarat government. Additionally, he argued the National Judicial Appointment Commission case. The defense team for Shah Rukh Khan’s son Aryan Khan, who was detained in the drugs-on-cruise case, was led by Mr. Rohatgi more recently.
