Michael Keaton reveals why he agreed to reprise his role as Batman in The Flash. The Flash is a DCEU solo film directed by Andy Muschietti and starring Ezra Miller as the title character. The development of The Flash was disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic, but the film was finally able to wrap up shooting by October 2021. Initially, the film was scheduled to premiere this year, but Warner Bros. eventually pushed The Flash to June 2023.
Although the plot details of The Flash are still under wraps, the movie is inspired by the Flashpoint comic book storyline. In the film, Miller’s scarlet speedster travels back in time to prevent his mother’s murder, but his detour has a major impact on the timeline. WB dives fully into the DC Multiverse with The Flash, as the film features not one, but two Batmans. Ben Affleck is reprising his Justice League role and Keaton is making a triumphant return for the first time since appearing in the Tim Burton films Batman and Batman Returns.
Now, in a new interview with Variety, Keaton explains why he agreed to play Batman again in The Flash. The actor has explained this before, but now he’s offering some new insight into what influenced his decision. Keaton says:
“I was curious what it would be like after all these years. I don’t do it that much – obviously, some of it – but I was curious about it, strangely, socially. This whole thing is gigantic. They have their own world. So I like to see it as an outlier, thinking, ‘Holy Moly!’
“The writing was really good! So I thought, why not? It’s fun to land and I’m curious to see if I can pull it off. ”

Keaton’s new comments hype up The Flash, which has been getting attention lately for all the wrong reasons. The DCEU project has been in the news for various controversies, including Miller’s second-degree assault, cross-dressing allegations, physical altercations, and their arrest in Hawaii. However, excitement for Keaton’s Bruce Wayne return doesn’t seem to be waning, especially since The Flash teased his improved Batman role and a clip featuring his infamous voice-0ver. The superhero genre has evolved in many ways since Keaton last donned the cowl, and his return now gives The Flash an appealing edge as it bridges the gap between his past outings and the present.
Keaton’s reasons for accepting The Flash seem logical and interesting. His terms are quite comforting to fans as the actor wouldn’t have chosen to return to his iconic role if he didn’t think his character was respected enough. What’s more, Keaton seems to have enjoyed playing Batman again, as the actor is set to return for future projects, including a Leslie Grace-fronted Batgirl movie. Now, it is difficult to confirm whether the actor will be involved in the same grueling action as in the Burton films. However, given Keaton’s confidence in his writing on The Flash, his arc should be really interesting to see if he can show off his fighting skills or not. Keaton’s performance will surely be one of the most intriguing aspects of The Flash when it hits theaters.
