It was the year 2017. At the age of 33, Lance Naik Gopal Singh Bhadoriya from Rashtriya Rifles gave his life in the Kulgam area of Jammu & Kashmir during a gun battle with terrorists. He received the Shaurya Chakra (India’s third-highest peacetime gallantry award after the Ashok Chakra and Kirti Chakra) a year after his posthumous approval.
Four years late and via courier, the award finally came this week.
Now, Gopal’s parents refused to accept the gallantry award and demanded its conferment from the President. During the 2008 Mumbai terror attack, the soldier also took part in counter-terrorism operations.
“We won’t accept the Shaurya Chakra by courier. According to custom, the President must bestow it, Gopal’s father Munim Singh Bhadoriya, who resides in Ahmedabad, informed ThePrint by phone.
In order to determine who receives the service benefits in addition to the Shaurya Chakra, the soldier’s widow Hemavati Chauhan and his parents engaged in a four-year judicial battle.

“Proceedings had to go to court because of a dispute between the parents and the wife of the fallen soldier. The parties reached a settlement through a court order after a protracted legal struggle, according to activist Vikas Manhas, who works with the families of fallen soldiers, told ThePrint.
