Kshama Bindu, 24, from Vadodara in Gujarat, is getting ready to get married herself on June 11. They described sologamy as “the recognition of coming of age and the act of self-acceptance.”
The 24-year-old Vadodara woman is getting ready for wedding herself on June 11 – but the groom is not ready. She is getting married herself.
Forgiveness Bindu’s wedding will take place in the traditional style with all the rituals like pheras and sindoor, however, there will be no groom and baraat.
“Since I was a teenager, I never wanted to get married. The tradition, somehow, never attracted me, but I wanted to be a bride. So I decided to marry myself. I call it sologamy,” said Kshama, from Gotri.
Every woman wants to be a bride, but she says she’s heard an actress in a web series say she’s not a wife. “With that, my thoughts on marrying myself flared up again,” said Kshama, who graduated with a degree in sociology from MS University and now works at a private firm outsourcing manpower, said.
No self-married woman can be found online in India. I may be the first to set an example of self-love in our country where marriages are considered sacred, ‘said the bride.
“Self-marriage is a commitment to stand up for yourself and an unconditional love for oneself. It is also an acknowledgment of maturity and self-acceptance. People marry someone they love. I love myself, so this marriage,” she explained.
She said some see her own marriage as irrelevant but want to portray it as “a matter of women”.
Kshama’s parents have blessed her for self-marriage. “They said they were comfortable with it as long as it made me happy,” she added.
Around fifteen friends and colleagues have sent out invitations to Kshama’s own wedding. The wedding will start on June 9 with mehendi ceremonies.
The bride writes five vows for a wedding to be held at a temple in Gotri.
Kshama will go to Goa for a two-week honeymoon after marriage.
