Dinesh Karthik has made a remarkable comeback to the Indian team after the 2019 ODI World Cup. Although he was written off by many, the veteran keeper-batsman made a sensational performance with the bat for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in IPL 2022 and was therefore recalled to the Indian T20I line-up.
Karthik, 37, is part of the Rishabh Pant-led Indian team for the T20I in South Africa. With just two balls to spare in the series opener, he was unbeaten on 1, while Karthik, who returned with 30 * off 21 balls in the second T20I against Proteas at Cuttack on Sunday evening (June), created another gem of an innings. 12). As such, he is currently performing for Team India as he continues to compete for a place in the national team’s 2022 T20 World Cup squad.
However, former India opener and commentator Gautam Gambhir feels that it will be difficult for Karthik to retain his place if KL Rahul, skipper Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli return.
Speaking at Star Sports’s match point, Gambhir praised DK’s second T20 heroics, saying, “It was very valuable (knock), he’s been doing it for the last 2-3 months for RCB, but I’m a little surprised.
“It’s too early to tell. The T20 World Cup is very much ahead. Will be, “he commented.
“In that case, he (Karthik) will not be in the World Cup squad. I will definitely have people like Rishabh Pant and Deepak Hooda (in the squad). We have KL Rahul, we have Suryakumar Yadav, Rohit Sharma. Once they return, it will be difficult for Dinesh Karthik to find a place in the playing XI. If not, there is no point in giving him a place in the team, ”Gambhir said.
“When KL, Rohit, Surya and Virat return, I will not see him in the playing XI. It will be your top 4, then you will have someone like Hooda, Pant, Hardik and Jadeja. The overs can be played too, and Karthik, unfortunately, will have to miss it until the selectors make a big call and drop one of them. ”
However, Karthik wants Team India to continue to perform in the remaining matches of the SA series to keep his World Cup dreams alive. After giving up a 2-0 lead on Tuesday evening (June 14), Pant & Co will face Temba Bauma’s South Africa in the third T20I to keep the series alive.
