Bollywood actress Deepika Padukone recently opened up about her battle with depression at an event in Mumbai. She is an advocate for mental health awareness and works extensively to de-stigmatize mental illness. At the event, she talked about how she even felt suicidal at times.
Deepika said, “I give all the credit to my mom for recognizing the signs and symptoms because it happened out of the blue. I was at a career high and everything was going well, so there was no reason or clear reason. I had to feel why I felt the way I did, but I would just break down for no reason.” There were days when I didn’t want to wake up, I would sleep because sleep was an escape for me, and I was suicidal at times.”
Recalling the tough times, the actress shared, “My parents live in Bengaluru and whenever they visit me, even now when they visit me, I always put on a brave front and everything is fine, you know you always have to show your parents that you’re fine…therefore I’m fine.” Was doing… They were going back to Bengaluru until one day when they left, I broke down, mom asked me routine hygiene questions and she knew instantly if it was a boyfriend, I think it was God sent for me.
Deepika Padukone runs the Live Love Laugh Foundation, which aims to help those struggling with their mental health.
Deepika added, “Coming back to me… I needed professional help. And then the journey continued. I was taken to a psychiatrist and went back and forth for months. At first I resisted it because there was so much stigma attached to mental illness, so it took me a few months until I started taking medication.
Earlier, Deepika Padukone opened up to Amitabh Bachchan on a set of ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati 13’, “I was diagnosed with depression in 2014. I felt weird that people didn’t talk about it. It was a stigma and people. Not much was known about it and at that time, if I was suffering from it, I realized that there must be many people out there who suffer from depression and if I could save one life, my purpose in life was fulfilled. We have come a long way now.
