By India Today Sports Desk: Captain Rohit Sharma said that India’s victory in the Delhi Test was crucial as the hosts showed a lot of character in the second match of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

India retained the Border-Gavaskar Trophy after securing a six-wicket win over Australia at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. In the Delhi Test, Ravindra Jadeja returned with 10 wickets, including a seven-wicket haul in the second innings.

Rohit-led side won the much-anticipated four-test series 2-1 after the fourth and final match ended in a draw. In the post-match presentation in Ahmedabad, Rohit said: “With the result 2-1, the first two Tests, we knew how important it was to start the series.

“I think the Delhi Test match was something I’m really proud of because we were very much behind the game and to comeback from the situation that we did shows a lot of character and a lot of fight,” said Rohit.

The India captain further said that there was something in the Test series for everyone to watch and stressed that there were challenges thrown at India but the team responded well.

“It was fantastic. Right from the word go. It was exciting, all the Test matches there was something in it for everyone to watch. We understand the importance of the series and definitely understand the importance of the opposition. After playing good cricket for 40-odd days we stand here with a result we are quite happy with. There were challenges thrown up but we responded to them,” said Rohit.

India also qualified for the World Test Championship (WTC) final after New Zealand sneaked a two-wicket win over Sri Lanka in their first match. India will meet Australia in the summit clash at The Oval from June 7.
